Two decent movies opening this weekend. Or at least one.

Ladder 49 reminds me of BACK DRAFT. They even took a line out of Back Draft and have it in the trailer for Ladder. How gay is that?

Shark Tale might be good:) .

both are doing pretty good on the Yahoo chart so far. I've made a ton of cash shorting Shark Tale stock as the expectations were very high for it, and it's not going to meet them. The reviews have been bad, 30% at Rotten Tomatoes. Hard to say how well it's going to do, anywhere in the range of 25 to 45 million. :toothless

23-31 -4.375 units :musician:
Shark Tale under 54.5 -150 6 units to win 4
Ladder 49 under 24.5 +140 3 untis to win 4.2

there still aren't a lot of user reviews at MSN movies, ever since they redieigned the website it's been that way. Ladder 49 only has 8, it should have at least twice that many.

re: Shark Tale...

4012 theaters is A LOT!!! With a 90 minute playing time only. That's a lot of showings for Shark Tale.

Ladder 49 doesn't look like it even has a story from the trailer.

yeah... the theater count is troubling, and the tracking must be good. I was wrong about Shrek and I might be wrong with this one, the difference being this is a new story, the characters don't look as strong as Shrek, it's getting bad reviews... I also think 54 million looks too high for an October kid's movie, maybe if it was released during the summer? Same studio that made Ice Age, right? that made something like 46 million. of course cg animaton seems to have become an even bigger phenomenon so maybe everyone's going to rush out and see it even if it doesn't look as good as Shrek, I'm not sure.

Shark Tale is only #6 on Yahoo movies. I think the Forgotten even did better, and Scooby Doo 2 made it all the way to #2 I think. :toothless

Ladder 49 looks decent. buuuuuuuuuuuuuuut I don't know, Travolta isn't that big of a draw, although Juaquin Phoenix might be. I just think there's value in the under at +140. Hey, Lee agrees with me, so I can't lose. It's a stone cold mortal lock. :bowl:

I'll also add that Ladder 49 is priced for a 19 million weekend on the HSX, and Shark Tale has had a turbulent few days, now hovering around a 55 million weekend price.

I was wrong about Shark Tale, its made by Dreamworks. Not the Ice Age studio, Blue Sky. Same studio that brought you Shrek 2.

Nope. Not me. Maybe it's someone else trying to get the odds down. Or up.

ever thought of that?

back to business....

I can't stand John Travolta. That fat slob hasn't had a hit in over 5 years.

Plus, Ladder 49 has NO plot. Zip.

Box Office Report is predicting 17 million.

I was just busting your balls. You SURE it wasn't you, though? :breakit:

I think BOP and Lee are definitely underpredicting Ladder. The under is by no means a lock... It looks to me like a pretty decent action/drama that should be a moderate hit. Maybe something like 23.5 million. :toothless

Nah... no way. Travolta doesn't have the star power. It's still September.

box Office Mojo knows his ****... he has it 19 million only.

Check out the actors doing the voices for SHARK TALE

Actors:

Jack Black (voice)
Robert DeNiro (voice)
Will Smith (voice)

that's some big stars backing this film. Plus 4016 theaters. :aktion033

I think Will Smith's voice acting is o.k., but, kinda weak in some ways. That's partially the script's fault, but, it doesn't look as funny as Shrek or something like Toy Story. Don't think the actors doing the voice acting have that much to do with a cartoon's success. Finding Nemo had very little star power behind the voices and it was a monster hit. This movie looks like a poor-man's version of Nemo, although it apparently isn't a total rip-off as it went into production before Nemo. My prediction: 42.5 million. :toothless Gil, what were your plays this week? I should start following you, dawg :messed:

yahoo reviews:

"The hourly numbers have been weird today, but overall, Shark Tale isn't doing so impressive. It's trailing more than 40% behind Shrek 2 and is basically on par with Garfield. Since it's not summer, the increases later in the day should definitely be higher. I'm thinking about 800 by the end of the day for a 12-14M opening.

Ladder is doing fine. I'm projecting 500 reviews and 6M opening day.

BTW, DP07 posted all the hourly updates since he started tracking on page 14 and 15. Since they're getting buried in the thread, I post the links in the initial post on first page. If there are other pages that need shortcuts, let me know."

although this person says a 6 million Friday, the main guy who tracks the reviews is saying it's doing better than he expected.

I see ladder making about 8 - 9 million

I had a small play on under 30 million for Shark Tale that I didn't bother to mention for +550, which would also be nice. (just incase)

I'm now hoping Sinbad numbers.
